Chicago 'L'

The Chicago 'L' is the rapid transit system of Chicago.  It is the third-busiest system in the United States, after the New York City Subway and the Washington Metro, and one of only four rapid transit systems in the United States to provide 24-hour service on at least part of the system.  The system operates service on eight lines: Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Pink, Brown, Purple, and Yellow.

The hub of the system is known as the Loop, in downtown Chicago.  Trains on the Brown, Purple (during rush hour), Pink, and Orange Lines travel around the Loop when they reach downtown, and then return to their outer terminal.  Green Line trains travel part of the Loop while going between branches.  The Red and Blue Lines travel through the downtown area in subway, with transfers to the Loop.
