Metrorail in Washington DC, more commonly known as "Metro", is a 103-mile regional rail system, encompassing the District of Columbia, as well as localities in Virginia and Maryland, first opened in 1976, with the original planned system completed in 2001. Metro has five different lines - Red, Green, Orange, Blue, and Yellow. Metro also has a number of different car types. Series 1000 cars were manufactured in the 1970's by Rohr Industries of San Diego, California, Series 2000, 3000, and 4000 cars were "Made in Italy by Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie S.p.A." (to quote the builder's plate on those cars) in the 1980's and early 1990's, and Series 5000 cars were built in the early 2000's by CAF of Spain. Additionally, the Breda 2000 and 3000 series cars are being rehabilitated by Alstom in Hornell, New York, and Alstom is also manufacturing Metro's new 6000 series cars. Photos and movies are divided up by line and station. Rail car interiors, rail car yards, and miscellaneous Metro stuff are shown on their own pages in the "Trains, Yards, Miscellaneous " section. In the descriptions within this section, "inbound" refers to travel towards Metro Center station when referring to the Red, Orange, and Blue Lines, and towards Gallery Pl-Chinatown station when referring to the Green and Yellow Lines. "Outbound" refers to travel away from Metro Center station when referring to the Red, Orange, and Blue Lines, and away from Gallery Pl-Chinatown station when referring to the Green and Yellow Lines. The Washington DC Metro system is also the transit system I ride most often, as I take the Red Line daily to and from my Dupont Circle office. |
