Abandoned Tunnel at Pentagon City

Beyond a set of chained glass doors (seen at right) lies a true rarity in Washington DC's subway system - an abandoned tunnel. From the glass doors, the tunnel immediately turns right, and there are several steps. After the steps, the tunnel proceeds diagonally under the intersection of 12th and Hayes Streets, and emerges at a set of stairs on the northeast side of the intersection, across the street from the mall. The following photos were taken using flash from the far end of the tunnel, looking towards the Metro station.

Regarding the tunnel's intended use, according to Gene Cowan, "[I]t was originally built as an entrance to the MCI buildings that stand to the northeast of the station, but for security reasons the entrance was never opened. The same security concerns prompted the placement of concrete barriers around the MCI building entrances at ground level, which are still there today."

Comments: Debris from both ceiling deterioration as well as from the outside litters the floor. Note that the floor tile which is visible does not match that in the Metro station, as this tunnel is owned by Arlington County rather than by Metro.
