Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan Accident

Just before 1:00 PM on November 3, 2004, an out-of-service train of Rohr cars collided with a revenue train of Breda 4000-series cars. According to the NTSB report, the accident was caused by a train operator asleep on the job. Due to the operator's inattentiveness, the train rolled backwards down the grade, back into the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan station, colliding with the in-service Breda train while it was servicing the station. No one was killed, and twenty were injured.

Breda 4018 was the lead car of the Breda consist that was servicing the station. The telescoped Rohr car is 1077. Rohr 1077 was damaged beyond repair in the accident, while Breda 4018 was repaired and returned to service.

Comments: An eight-car Breda train services the station. This was the view seen by people upon arriving at Woodley Park-Zoo the day after the accident, with the large tarp shielding the accident from view, and the Rohr car plainly visible above it.

Comments: The obliterated cab end of Rohr 1077. Note that the train is simply not there beyond the first set of doors. Additionally, note that the dislodged flip-dot sign reads "SILVER SPRING". I find that to be an oddity, as trains out of service normally say "NO PASSENGERS". Additionally, this train was moving towards Shady Grove, away from Silver Spring.

Comments: Overview of the platform looking inbound. The headlights of a train arriving can be seen in the distance. Single-tracking due to the 2004 accident required outbound trains to service the station from the inbound track.

Comments: Rohr 1076 and 1077 were later moved to a track at the back of Brentwood Yard under the inbound Red Line track. Much of 1077 is covered to protect it, as a number of the windows are missing, as are the first several feet of the car.
