Metro Center (Upper Level)

Metro Center is the central hub station of the Metrorail rapid transit system in Washington, D.C. Metro Center was one of the original Metro stations, and service began on March 27, 1976.

Metro Center is on the Blue, Orange, and Red Lines, and is a transfer station between the Red Line and the already-joined Blue and Orange Lines.

The mezzanine (upper) level of the station contains side platforms for Red Line trains traveling towards Glenmont and towards Shady Grove. Orange Line and Blue Lines trains traveling in both directions share a center platform on the station's lower level.

(Metro Center lower level is listed on a separate page)

Comments: With Metro Center being one of the original stations from the system's 1976 opening, some things have needed to be changed over the years. On this pylon strip map, Union Station's former name of "Union Station-Visitor Center" was changed, as the station is now just "Union Station", and the yellow dot at Fort Totten has been painted out, since it was later determined that the Yellow Line, originally intended to go all the way to Greenbelt, would terminate at Mt. Vernon Square. Since this photo was taken, Yellow Line service was extended to Fort Totten during off-peak hours, rendering the yellow dot at Fort Totten relevant again.

Comments: Due to a sick passenger at Farragut North, trains were single-tracking through Gallery Place-Chinatown, Metro Center, and Farragut North. As such, the CAF train on the left is a Shady Grove train, single-tracking and servicing Metro Center from the the Glenmont side. The Rohr train at right on the Shady Grove track is actually stuck, unable to proceed to Farragut North due to the sick passenger. As such, that train was offloaded and put out of service. It is unknown why the train "changed ends", as the train did not reverse direction.

Comments: PIDS screen indicating that a Red Line train to Union Station has arrived. This particular train was actually terminating at Judiciary Square rather than Union Station, but due to the lack of a destination code for Judiciary Square, trains used the Union Station destination code, and displayed "SPECIAL" on the train signs.
